Minton V. (Mint) Harris, 91, longtime resident of Hibbing died Sunday, September 23, 2012 at the University Medical Center-Mesabi in Hibbing. He was born on December 5, 1920 to Charles and Alice (Vogel) Harris in Proctor, MN. He attended both Proctor and Duluth schools. Mint served his country during WWII in the U.S. Navy. After the War he entered the Sacrament of Marriage with Mary C. McGillis on May 2, 1946 in Superior, Wisconsin. Mint began his career as a journeyman machinist with the DM&IR Railway. After leaving the railroad he went into sales with Cummins Diesel. He then went into sales management with Purolator Filters of Rayway, NJ. He then established his own company, MH Equipment and Salvage, which he ran until his retirement. Minton was a lifetime member of the Northern Engineers Club, the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, and the Hibbing Horseshoe Club, where he enjoyed pitching with his friends. In 2001 he was the Titan of Taconite.
Mint was a devoted family man. He loved to travel with his wife and to spend time with his children, grandchildren and extended family. He enjoyed many sports both as a participant and a fan. His presence could light up a room. Mint was a man of great kindness and generosity and was always happy to help friends and family wherever he could.
He is survived by his wife, Mary C. Harris, Hibbing, daughter, Nancy Harris, Bethesda, MD, son, Minton J. (Mint) (Jeri Durheim) Harris, Hibbing, two granddaughters, Bridget Catherine Campbell, Jackson, WY, and Annie Minton Campbell, Burlington, NC, sister, Blanche Moen, Proctor, MN., sister-in-law, Bernice McGillis, Superior, WI, and brother-in-law, Gene (Jean) McGillis, Lake Nebagamon, WI, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Alice (Vogel) Harris, two brothers, Charles Harris, Fred Harris, four sisters, Marian Spranger, Rose White, Elaine Johnson, and Emma Stark.
Mint’s family would like to thank the staff of University Medical Center-Mesabi and the North Star Hospice for their care and kindness during his final days.
Funeral services for Mint will be held at 12:00 noon, Thursday, September 27, 2012 at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Hibbing. The Rev. Fr. Gabriel Waweru will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial. Visitation will be held from 10:00 am until the 12:00 noon funeral Mass at the church on Thursday. Interment will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery of Hibbing. Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing.
Pallbearers will be James Juricich, Dennis McClelland, Dr. Mike Enich, George Penoncello, Bill Moen, Jim LeBlanc and Pat LeBlanc.
