Alfred Samuel Diehl, Jr
Alfred ‘Al’ Samuel Diehl, Jr., 84, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2014 in Duluth, MN. Born in Duluth to Alfred Samuel Diehl, Sr. and Bonnie (Jones) Diehl on November 11, 1929. He attended and graduated from the University of Minnesota – Duluth in 1952 with a BA in Business and Economics, and also was an Air Force veteran. In 1960, Al married the love of his life, Josephine Katherine (Kay) Dengler in Mount Lebanon, Pennsylvania.
Al lived an amazing life focused on his family, the outdoors, and the Iron Range community. He and Kay spent their lives in Hibbing and at Sturgeon Lake, raising their three daughters. He started A.S. Diehl Insurance in 1958 and continued to run the agency until his retirement in 1984. Al was also an avid outdoorsman and volunteer and an active 10 year advisor and past president for the Hibbing Chapter of Junior Achievement. Additionally, Al was a lifelong member of the Masonic Lodge 255 – Lodge of Perfection and the Aad Temple Shrine.
Al was predeceased by his wife of 37 years, Kay who passed away in 1998. He is survived by his daughters Lisa Diehl (Bruce) Foreman of Edina, MN, Julie (Steve) Bishop of Seattle, WA, Betsy (Allan) Rand of Seattle, WA, as well as his sister, Leah Nethercut of Santa Rosa, CA and Ginny Forti, his devoted friend and companion. His grandchildren include Meredith, Samantha and Lindsay Rand, and Zoe Bishop.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 15, 2014 in the St. James Episcopal Church, Hibbing. Visitation will be in the Dougherty Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014 , with Masonic prayers at 6:30; and in the church on Friday from 10 am. until service time. Burial will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery. At Al’s request, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hibbing Foundation at 990 West 41st Street, #70, Hibbing, MN 55746 or the charity of your choice.
