Alice Low Slattery
Alice Low Slattery, 98, Hibbing, died Tuesday November 13, 2012, at Virginia Regional Medical Center. She was born in Faribault, MN to George and Jesse Low. Alice graduated from Faribault High School, attended Winona State University, and graduated with a teaching degree from Mankato State University. She received her Master’s Degree from the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Alice began her teaching career in Dexter, MN and Bruton, MN. When World War II broke out, she served as a U.S. Navy WAVE in New York City. After the war, Alice resumed her teaching career at Hopkins High School and New Prague High School. She later worked at Dayton’s in Minneapolis for a few years before moving to Hibbing, where she was hired at Hibbing High School by her future husband, John Slattery. Alice was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Alpha Delta Kappa, MEA, and many teaching organizations. She volunteered at Fairview University Medical Center—Mesabi as part of the hospital auxiliary and she was an avid bridge player.
She is survived by three nieces: Janet Low of Faribault, Jean Low of Sun City, AZ, and Gail (Peter) McGillen of Kilkenny, MN; two great-nephews: Ryan and Aaron McGillen; several nephews, a niece, and many great-nieces and great-nephews on the Slattery side of the family, including special great- nephew Tim (Brenda) Slattery of Virginia. Her family would like to extend thanks to Kathy and Forrest Koland and Liz and Fred Freihammer of Hibbing for their care and friendship.
Alice was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1997; her parents and a brother, Clarence (Olive) Low.
Visitation will be Saturday November 17, 2012, from 11:00—11:30 AM in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Hibbing.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:30 AM Saturday in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Hibbing.
Memorials may be made to St. Michael’s Health and Rehabilitation Center in Virginia, MN or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
