Alyce J. Arola

Alyce J. Arola, 84, Nashwauk, died Saturday, August 13, 2016, at Grand Village Nursing Home in Grand Rapids.  She was born in Nashwauk on July 14, 1932, to Martin and Orlanda Williams.  Alyce graduated from Nashwauk High School and St. Cloud Teachers College.   She taught in Eveleth for one year and was united in marriage to Donald Arola on Aug. 28, 1954, at Nashwauk United Methodist Church.  She and Don lived in Duluth for two years, where she continued teaching as Don completed college, and then lived in Cass Lake before making their home in Nashwauk.  While raising her family, Alyce continued to serve as a substitute teacher in the Nashwauk—Keewatin School District.  She was an active member of Nashwauk United Methodist Church and its women’s circle as well as The Order of Eastern Star and Nashwauk American Legion Auxiliary.  She loved cabin life at Swan Lake, camping, and traveling.  She and Don spent 15 winters in Florida.  Alyce also enjoyed reading, knitting, crocheting, and all holidays.  She treasured her grandkids.

She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Donald, of Nashwauk; by three children:  Donald M. “Donnie” (Toni) Arola of Sonora, CA, David (Terryl) Arola of Pine City, MN, and Dana (Jim) Steve of St. Joseph, MN; seven grandchildren:  Jazmin (Tyler) Haedrich, Christopher (Ashley Arnone) Parrez, Jessica (Jonny) Livingston, Rob (Annie) Arola, Andrew (Jamie) Arola, Derek Steve, and Alyssa Steve; and by four great-grandchildren:  Silas Donald, Malee, Lyla, and Brooklyn.  She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be Friday August 19, 2016, at Pengilly United Methodist Church from 9 AM until the 11 AM funeral service.  Interment will be in Nashwauk Cemetery.  Arrangements are with Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing.  To leave an online message of condolence, please visit www.doughertyofhibbing.com .  Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
