Arthur G. Baker
Arthur G. Baker, 90, Bear River, died Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at Heritage Manor in Chisholm, MN. He was born to Arthur and Esther Baker in Minneapolis on June 6, 1923. Arthur and his wife Ruby moved to Bear River in 1949 and started farming. He was self taught in farming and many other areas of life. Arthur was an exceptional deer hunter, enjoyed being in the woods, and enjoyed many a fishing trip with his sons, grandsons and granddaughters. He was an avid reader, a great historian, a great political observer, and was aware and up to date on world events. Arthur was truly loved and respected by his children, grandchildren, nephews and nieces. He had a great wit and imparted his words of wisdom to the very end. He had been employed in the construction industry as a superintendent and was a member of the Carpenters and Joiners Union. He was a proud member of the labor movement, a respected boss and dedicated worker. Arthur was a combat wounded veteran of WW II receiving the Purple Heart for wounds received on Iwo Jima. Arthur was a part of the regiment that was protecting the original flag raisers on Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima. He was a huge fan of the Lawrence Welk Show.
He is survived by his 4 sons, David (Tran) Baker, Bear River, Michael (Claudia) Baker, Rhinelander, WI, Patrick (Min) Baker, Side Lake, MN, and Steve (Mary) Baker, Otsego, MN, 5 daughters, Pamela Wood, Elk River, MN, Sandy Baker, Forest Lake, MN, Linda (Orin) Volkman, Wyoming, MN, Ann Pucelj, Chisholm, and Lauren (Steve) Tuohy, Chisholm, 21 grandchildren, numerous great and great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Ruby Baker.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am. Saturday, May 3, 2014 in the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing with Synod Minister Gloria Hegg of The Bear River Lutheran Church officiating. Visitation will be in the funeral home Friday from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. and continue Saturday at 10:00 am. He will be laid to rest in the Morcom Cemetery in Bear River with Star and Dixie his loving American Eskimo dogs.
