Carol Janet Peloquin, 91, of Hibbing, passed away peacefully on December 26, 2023 in the
comfort of her home, surrounded by family. Carol was born July 2, 1932 in Minneapolis to
Gunnar and Millicent (Curtis) Westad, and graduated from Minneapolis South High School in
1950. After graduation she worked for the telephone company in downtown Minneapolis. She
met her husband Robert Peloquin while vacationing in Florida on Panama Beach, and they
married on January 20, 1954. They enjoyed 68 years together until Robert’s passing in 2022,
and the two of them were blessed with a beautiful family of 10 children.
Carol and Bob’s lake place on Big Sturgeon was the summer gathering place for family and
friends throughout the decades, and her famous spaghetti left people in a carb-induced stupor
after one too many helpings. Carol kept active through participation in long-standing TOPS, bridge, and book club groups. She was a hospital auxiliary volunteer and visited people to help them sign up for Lifeline
medical alert in its early days. She was an election judge and candidate debate moderator in
Hibbing for the League of Women Voters, of which she served a term as president. She
cherished the friendships and fond memories made while chaperoning Hibbing High School
Marching Band trips and enjoyed the many concerts and musicals she attended with her
daughters. Carols’ love of shopping was the stuff of family legend, and more than once she caused her
grown children to anxiously search a store after she outpaced them in pursuit of epic bargains.
No one in Minnesota felt the loss of Dayton’s department store more acutely than Carol, and
she kept her old-style raised print charge card in hopes that Dayton’s would once more become
a fixture in downtown Minneapolis. Carol was a fan of Golden Gopher football and hockey even though games “occasionally” resulted in sighs of disappointment and yells of frustration as they ended in a loss. We find it very fitting that the short-handed football team came through for her and won their bowl game in
Detroit on the day she passed. Ski-U-Mah, may she rest in peace!
She is survived by children Steve (Kay), Park Rapids, MN; Mary Wulf (Jerry), Lakeville, MN;
Kathy Asman (Randy), Side Lake, MN; Debra Olson (Blake), Escanaba, MI; Richard,
Maplewood, MN; Jim (Liz), Lino Lakes, MN; Amy Dahl (David), Floodwood Lake, MN; Jane Fink
(Tim) Rochester, MN; along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Marilyn Hougen, husband Robert, and
children Michael and Jill.
