Charles W. Feyder
Charles W. "Chubby" Feyder, 85, Side Lake, died June 19, 2015, at his home on Big Sturgeon with his wife and family at his bedside. Chubby was born on April 25, 1930, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota to Theodore and Irene Feyder. He was all- county in football and basketball for Cathedral High School, served as a pilot in the US Air Force, and was united in marriage to Mary Ellen Hawn on May 3, 1954. After graduation from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion with a business degree in 1957, Chubby and Mary Ellen moved to Fargo, ND where he was a manager in training with Sears Corp. This job eventually allowed them to move with their young, growing family to Side Lake in 1962. He later worked for Kordel Corporation as a business manager with their Ace Hardware and Kordel Furniture stores.
Chubby dearly loved his wife and family, leaving his greatest legacy in them and the beautiful home they created on the lake, a place that remains special to each and every one of their children’s growing families. Chubby enjoyed raking the beach, throwing Frisbee in the lake, sailing, shooting baskets in the backyard, and entertaining the constant flow of friends, relatives, and families that filled their lives with fun and special memories. He loved golf, and once his legs started to give him trouble, it was his greatest wish to get back to golfing with his friends, kids and grandkids. He is remembered by his family for his many “Chubby-isms”, and the grandkids remember sneaking into the candy cupboard so “Papa” wouldn’t catch them in his clean kitchen with wet swimsuits and sandy feet. Friends and family also fondly remember his backyard BBQ chicken dinners made for the many large Sunday afternoon gatherings. With the news that dad’s time was limited, the entire Feyder family of 40 gathered at the lake the weekend before he passed for a final farewell, giving everyone from near and far a chance to say goodbye, listen to stories, and share in the love that he and Mary Ellen inspired in so many.
Charles is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Ellen; seven children: Ted (Micky) Feyder of Lakeshore, and their sons Sam (Taryn) and Will (Sarah); Nancy Hollis (Terry Georges) of Maple Plain, and her daughter Katie (Bibi) Garcia; Tom (Cindy) Feyder of Marble, and their daughters Lindsey, Angela and Michelle; Julie (Bill) Pitcher of White Bear Lake, and their sons Michael and Matthew; Ann (Tim) Grozdanich of Hibbing, and their children Nicole (Charlie) Smith, Meghan (Tyler) Kimber, Michael Grozdanich; Cathy (Bruce Wirth) Wandmacher of Mahtomedi, and her children Kelsey and Charlie; and Carol (Del) Gregory of Mahtomedi, and their children Ryan and Elizabeth; 6 great-grandchildren, Dylan & Emily Smith, Lily and Samantha Kimber, Evie and Vincent Garcia and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and 6 siblings.
