David Duncan

November 3, 1944 — December 13, 2012

David Duncan
David Duncan 68, of Hibbing passed away on December 13, 2012 at the University Medical Center-Mesabi in Hibbing.   He was born on November 3, 1944, in the County of Ayre, in the District of Irvine, Scotland, the youngest of seven children born to John and Antonina Duncan.  At a young age he was drawn to the sea, and with his twin brother Peter he entered the Royal British Merchant Marines, where he would sail off to many an adventure over the next 21 years.  David never became an American citizen - he remained a British Subject to his dying day, fiercely proud of his Scottish heritage.  From his early twenties, wherever he was in the world, David presented himself as a stunning entertainer - having been gifted with a natural musical talent.  The ultimate one-man-band, he would effortlessly render all of the most popular songs of the day, from the hits of Johnny Cash to those of Roy Orbison.  This God-given gift to brighten the lives of anyone in need of a "cup of cheer" served him well when he finally settled in Hibbing, Minnesota in 1987.  For many years David gave of himself and of his talent at Weddings and night clubs, giving the residents of the Iron Range a taste of something that most of them had never heard before.  He was an avid student of the poetry of his fellow Countryman Robert Burns, and his distinctively Scottish accent served him well whenever he quoted Burns to an Iron Ranger.  He was also a poet, an artist, a metal craftsman, a carpenter, a historian, an apprentice Wine Taster, and a devoted husband.  He truly lived the most extra-ordinary life, and he will be greatly missed by many.
He is survived by his beloved wife Meadow (Moriarity) Duncan, Hibbing, his daughter Derys (Duncan) Macfarland, Ayrshire, Scotland, and granddaughter Shaunet of Ayre, Scotland; sister, Mary Cassels, of Prestwick, Scotland his sister-in-law Rosaleen Duncan of Glasgow Scotland, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Antonina (Grant) Duncan, three sisters Elizabeth Pallant, Margarat Hunter and Helen Duncan Blain; and two brothers John Duncan and his twin brother Peter Duncan.
A memorial service for David will be held at 1:00pm, Wednesday December 19, 2012 at the Dougherty Funeral Home in Hibbing.  A visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service at the funeral home on Wednesday.
