Dessie Wynoka (Carter) Varichak
May 10, 1933 – March 30, 2019
Wynoka (Carter) Varichak, 85, of Hibbing, passed away on Saturday, March 30, 2019, in Buhl, MN. She was born on May 10, 1933, in Oakville, TX, to Harvol (H.V.) and Pearl (Harrod) Carter.
She graduated from George West High School in 1951. While working as a civilian at the Naval Base in Kingsville, TX, she met and married Richard W. Varichak (Chisholm, MN). They moved to Austin, TX, where she worked as a telephone operator. When they moved to Hibbing, MN, she continued working for the telephone company for a few years before moving on to the Mesaba Clinic. Noka was the third employee hired at Hibbing Taconite Company in 1975, retiring as a Mining Administrator twenty years later in 1995.
Noka was an accomplished artist, investing many years creating exquisite pieces of painted China. Having grown up on a farm in south Texas, she was a talented gardener and took great pride in creating and attending to her beautiful yard and colorful gardens. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother, and a kind and caring grandmother.
She is survived by her son, Tom Varichak of Lander, WY; daughter, Vikki (Jeff) Jacobson of Hibbing; son, Donny (Ann) of Hibbing; and daughter, Pam Varichak of Hibbing; grandchildren: Shasta (Jody) Slade, Daniel Varichak, and Sarah Varichak; Beau (Becky) Jacobson, Kelly (Ryan) Christianson, Vanessa (Scott) Hirsch, Lindsay (Nick) Sosalla, and Kyle Jacobson; Shawna Varichak, Taylor (Bjorn) Stohlhammer, Cole Varichak, Ashley (Chris) Simat, Casey Staniger, Sabrie Staniger, and Joey Staniger; Ashley (Cody) Gunderson, Travis Varichak, and Caleb Varichak; 17 great-grandchildren; two brother-in-laws, George Varichak and David Varichak, both of Stevensville, MT; a sister-in-law, Karen (Kenny) Varichak of Pheonix, AZ; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents; her brothers; Larry Bryce, Talmage Carter, and LaMoyne Carter; sister-in-laws; Maxine (Larry) Bryce and June (Talmage) Carter; and her brother –in-law, Kenny Varichak.
Funeral: A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 7th, at Dougherty Funeral Home, 2615 First Avenue, Hibbing, MN . Pastor Mickey Olson, of the Peace United Methodist Church, will officiate.
Visitation: Will be held one hour before the services, from 12:00 – 1:00 p.m., at Dougherty Funeral Home.
Burial: Will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing, MN
Luncheon: Will follow immediately after the services to be held at the home of Don and Ann Varichak in Hibbing.
Honorary Pallbearers: Will be grandsons; Daniel Varichak, Beau Jacobson, Kyle Jacobson, Cole Varichak, Travis Varichak, and Caleb Varichak; nephews; Leonard Bryce and Kenny Bryce; and cousin; Dennis Harrod. Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing.
