Dr. Dermot Francis Reynolds, beloved father, devoted husband, and cherished friend to many, passed away peacefully on November 24, 2023 in Duluth, Minnesota surrounded by his loving family. Dermot was born on September 25, 1931 in Killester, Co. Dublin, Ireland, the youngest of six children. As a child he attended The Gaelic School where he learned Irish, played soccer and boxed, and excelled in his studies. Upon graduation he pursued an education in the sciences and was accepted at the highly
competitive Royal College of Physicians in Ireland to study Medicine. He graduated with honors in 1958 with a degree in Medicine. He went on to the Royal College of Surgeons and graduated in 1961 as a Surgeon. Dermot subsequently received a Fellowship in Urology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester,
Minnesota. He went on to complete his training in General Surgery at Flowers Hospital in Toledo Ohio. It was in Rochester Minnesota that he met the love of his life, Maria Magdalena (Magdalena).
Magdalena and Dermot married at St. John’s Catholic Church in 1966. After completing his fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, he spent two years practicing urology in Kerrville, Texas, at the VA Medical Center in South Texas before settling in his practice in Hibbing, Minnesota. He served the remainder of his career
in Hibbing, retiring in 1997 after 40 years in the practice of medicine. Dermot and Magdalena quickly fell in love with Northern Minnesota and “The Range” with its pine
forests, mining hills and lakes. Once they arrived, Dermot soon became an avid fisherman and cross county skier, spending much of his time swimming in his pool and walking the trails with his dogs. He was an avid reader, finishing a book a week for most of his life. He often took his family to visit their relatives in Ireland and Chile, helping his children build lasting relationships with their extended family. After retirement he enjoyed international travel with his wife and spending time with his grandchildren
who were the apple of his eye. Dermot appreciated all the people in his life – his many friends, neighbors, staff, and patients. Naturally inquisitive, he sought to better understand the world around him through his love of books, travel, and
good conversation. Best of all, he loved sharing a story and having a laugh with anyone he met. He was a loving giant in the eyes of his family and community, and he will be greatly missed.
Dermot is preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Maria Magdalena Reynolds (Wilson), his son Dermot Reynolds, his parents Patrick and Mary, brothers Desmond, Kevin, and Jack and his sisters Mora and Lily. He is survived by his children Magadalena Reynolds-Allen, Maria (Andy) Strom, Brendan Reynolds and
Alexandra Reynolds and niece Margaret (Mike) Reynolds, his beloved grandchildren Alexandra Lily and Samuel Allen and other dear nieces and nephews in Ireland and New York.
A funeral Mass will be held at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at 11:00 AM with visitation beginning at 9:30 AM. Interment will be held at Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing. As a tribute to his Irish heritage, guests are encouraged to wear something green. In lieu of flowers, Dermot’s family asks that donations be made in his name to
the Humane Society or Salvation Army.
