Dwight Francis Wherland
Dwight Francis Wherland, 95, a lifelong resident of Hibbing, Minnesota died Saturday, January 17, 2015. He was the son of Roy and Mae (Auger) Wherland. Born on October 19, 1919, he was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Dwight married Mary Mihelich on December 24, 1941. They celebrated 73 years of marriage last Christmas Eve. Dwight was employed by the Oliver Mining Co. and retired from Minntac as a foreman in 1985. He enjoyed fishing at his cabin on Beauty Lake with his son-in-law and grandchildren and hunting in Wyoming and Montana with his brothers-in-law. After retirement Dwight and Mary enjoyed travels to Hawaii and Florida. A handyman who could fix just about anything, Dwight enjoyed reading and tinkering in his garage. His numerous interests kept him active well into his nineties.
Surviving are his wife, Mary; a daughter, Janet (Gerald) Johnson; granddaughters Dr. Sherri Johnson and Traci (Dan) Eckholm; grandson, Travis (Michele) Johnson all of Duluth, MN, Christopher (Jill Gunderson) Johnson, Esko, MN, great-grandchildren Olivia Johnson, Jack Eckholm and Owen Johnson of Duluth, MN; sisters Marcella Aslakson and Patricia Capanoli, Hibbing, MN; three sisters-in-law: Beatrice Wherland, Hibbing, Aune Mihelich, Detroit Lakes, MN and Florence Menard, Minneapolis; brother-in-law Milan Mihelich, Bemidji MN; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Also surviving is Dwight’s childhood friend, Miles Flynn, of Carmel, CA. They never failed to call one another on their birthdays which were a day apart. Dwight was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bill and John Wherland; brothers-in-law Genford Aslakson, Mario Capanoli, Rudy Mihelich, George Mihelich, Wayne Boldt, and Bryce Menard; and sisters-in-law Edna Mihelich, Anne Boldt, Shirley Mihelich and Loretta Wherland.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, January 22, 2015, in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church where visitation will begin at 10 AM. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Arrangements are with Dougherty Funeral Home.
