Francis John McGinn
Francis John McGinn, age 98, Proctor, MN and formerly of Hibbing, MN died on June 4, 2014 at St. Mary’s Essentia Health Hospice Care in Duluth, MN. Francis was born on November 14, 1915 in Millville, MN to John and Ella McGinn and was raised in South St. Paul and then attended the University of Minnesota Extension Division. He was an Army veteran, serving his country in the U.S. Army, Fifth Armored Division, European theatre of WW II for nearly five years and was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain. Francis began his long and distinguished career in the accounting profession working for Butler Brothers. He worked as an accountant for the Mary Ellen Mine in Biwabik and with Pioneer Mining Company as a tax accountant and director, the Iron Range Natural Gas Company as a tax accountant and director, and with McGladrey Hendrickson and Co. as manager in that firms Hibbing office. He opened his own public accounting firm in September of 1969 and served the community for 12 years where he functioned in almost all phases of accounting. The firm was sold to McGladry & Pullen in 1981 and a year later was acquired by Fort & Company. He finished out his career with Fort & Company, having achieved the status of Certified Public Accountant on January 1, 2003. Well known and respected in the community of Hibbing where he made his home, Fran had been active in a variety of different projects within his Church, the Knights of Columbus, as well as participating in a number of civic functions. He had been a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
Francis is survived by his children, Mike (Marge Bray) McGinn, Duluth, Marilyn (Kermit) Nielsen, Cloquet, and Jim McGinn of Minneapolis, five grandchildren, Mike (Alena) McGinn, Duluth, Deborah (Gary) Knoll, South Range, Wis., Christine (Thomas) Ringat, Clouqet, Jamie (Dan) Nielson, Duluth, and Barry McGinn, St. Paul, 6 great grandchildren, Shawn, Caitlyn, Holly, Bradly, Sarah, Allison and Trace, and great great grandson, Mason. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Helen Mahoney McGinn, and siblings, Kathryn Madsen, and Edward, Glenn, Bernard and William McGinn.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am. Saturday, June 7, 2014, in the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Hibbing with the Rev. Fr. Brian Lederer celebrating the Mass of Christian Burial. Visitation will be in Church Saturday starting at 10:00 am. Burial will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by the Mid-Range Honor Guard. Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home in Hibbing.
