Gary E. Saari, 67 Hibbing, died Thursday January 24, 2013, at Fairview University Medical Center-Mesabi.  He was born on September 20, 1945, to Matt and Beatrice (Piekkola) Saari in Deer River, MN.  He was a resident of Hibbing for the past 39 years.  Gary was a graduate of the University of Minnesota receiving his bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.  He was married on October 16, 1965, to Janet (Reier) Saari and they were married for 47 years.  Gary was most recently employed as a mechanical engineer with the EVTAC Mining Company, retiring after 25 years of service.  He was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Hibbing, the Hibbing Elks Lodge, and the Northern Engineering Club of Minnesota.  He enjoyed traveling, especially on cruise ships with his wife Janet and going to the casinos.  Gary loved being on his lawn tractor, and in the winter months, plowing snow.  He was also known for his excellent craftsmanship in cabinet making.
He is survived by his wife, Janet Saari, Silica; his brother, Calvin (Barbara) Saari, Nashwauk; sister, Mary Ann Kochevar, Hibbing; his two brothers-in-law, Wally (Jo) Reier, Duluth, MN, and Harold Reier, Fargo, ND; his sister-in-law, Barbara (Dr. Martin) Tilley, Kearney, NE; and his numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and several cousins.  He was preceded in death by his parents, and his three brothers-in-law: Jim, Gary, and Ronald Reier.
Funeral services for Gary will be held at 2:00pm, Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at  Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Hibbing.  The Rev. Dave Stevens will officiate.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service at the church on Tuesday.  Interment will be in the Suomi Cemetery at a later date.  Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing.
