George E. Nelson

George E. Nelson, 82, lifetime Hibbing resident, died tragically on Tuesday, January 5, 2016.  He was born in Giese, MN, December 28, 1933 to Emil and Iva (Hamm) Nelson.

George married Nancy Skog September 5, 1953, and in June 1954, he was drafted into the Army where he served until 1956, including service in Italy and Germany.

George began his work career with the  railroad, then  Mesaba Construction as a cement truck driver, then in 1968 he went to work for the State of MN as a custodian and boiler engineer, retiring in 1995.

George loved hunting, fishing, gardening, and was passionate about his cars.  His favorite thing was spending time at the cabin with family and friends, who already miss him greatly.

George was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, LaVerne and Neil.  He is survived by his wife Nancy; daughters Barb (Brad) Kruger, Bagley, Stephanie (Mike) Ellett, Angora,  Gail Nelson, Hibbing,  Valerie (Jeff) Wollin, Grand Rapids; son Russell (Patty) Nelson, Angora; brother Norman Nelson, Hibbing; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for George will be held at 11:00am, Saturday, January 9, 2016 at the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing.  The Rev. Darrell Nelson will officiate.  Visitation will be 5-7pm, Friday, January 8, 2016 at the Dougherty Funeral Home.  The visitation will continue one hour prior to the funeral service at the funeral home on Saturday.  Interment will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery of Hibbing.  Pallbearers are his grandchildren;  Ryan Kruger, David Kruger, Caleb Kruger, Scott Nelson, Thomas Nelson, Steven Ellett, Andrew Ellett, Brian Ellett, and Lane Wollin.  Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing.
