Gertie Marie Emma Hengel

Gertie M.E. Hengel, 96, Birmingham, AL, formerly of Hibbing went home to spend eternity with the Lord on Thursday, December 1, 2016 in Birmingham.  She was born on December 5, 1919.

Gertie was a former co-owner of Sammy’s Pizza in Hibbing, and Jim Davenport’s Pizza in Vestavia, AL.  She was a longtime member of the Lutheran Church of Vestavia Hills in Alabama.

She is survived by her children, Harvey (Candance) Hengel, Cape Coral, FL; Caroline (Don) Besky, Luck, WI; Darlene (Len) Thorson, Calera, AL; 13 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren.

Gertie was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Marilyn Mae, granddaughter, Trestte Thorson, sister, Clara Hamm, brothers Carl and Harry Kuhlman.

Funeral services for Gertie will be 1:00pm, Thursday, December 8, 2016 at the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing.  The Rev. Tim Yearyean will officiate.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service at the funeral home on Thursday.  Interment will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery of Hibbing.  Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing.  Memorials may be made to Lutheran Church of Vestavia Hills, 201 South Montgomery Highway, Birmingham, AL, 35216.
