Harold E. Knowles, 98, Hibbing, passed away on Monday, June 18, 2012, in his home.  He was born in Lake Park, Iowa on Feb. 19, 1914, to Wilbur and Katie Knowles.  Harold grew up and attended school in Lake of the Woods County and Mahnomen before graduating from high school in Livermore, IA.  He was united in marriage to Luverne Neubauer on January 15, 1941, in Mahnomen and they made their home in Fosston, MN where they raised cattle.  Harold and Luverne had eight children in Fosston and moved to Hibbing in 1956, where their ninth child, Kenneth, was born.  In Hibbing, Harold had worked as a brakeman for U.S. Steel at the Sherman Mine and at a steel plant in Duluth, MN until his retirement in 1974.  He enjoyed wood working and helping people.
He is survived by 7 children:  Elwood “Woody” Knowles of St. Louis Park, MN, Lowell (Bernie) Knowles of Hibbing, Sharon (Jason) Gehrke of Buyck, Patricia (John) Atsatt of Duluth, MN, Katherine (Allen) Powers of Hibbing, Judith (Galen) Rogers of Mankato, MN and Kenneth (Susan) Knowles of Hibbing; a daughter-in-law, Debbie Knowles of Anoka; a sister, Ethel Gullingsrud of Mahnomen; 3 brothers: Lawrence (Sena) Knowles of Mahnomen, Ralph (Liz) Knowles of Spring Lake Park, and Daniel Knowles of Texas; 17 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Luverne, in 2010; by an infant daughter, Joyce Knowles; a son, Howard Knowles in 2007; his parents, 3 sisters, and 4 brothers.
Funeral services will be 1 PM Saturday June 23, 2012, at Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing.  Visitation will be Saturday from 12 noon until the 1 pm funeral service.  Interment will be in Riverside Park Cemetery, Mahnomen, at a later date.  To sign the online guest register, please visit www.doughertyofhibbing.com.
