Harriet Jeane Maras, aged 99, of Hibbing, MN, peacefully went to be home with her Lord and
Savior on April 24, 2024. Born on September 7, 1924, in Springfield, WI, to Oscar and Hilda
(Krenz) Kamerud, her remarkable life was defined by a lifelong devotion to her family, faith, and
community.
Known affectionately as Jeane to those close to her, she grew up in Chaska before settling in
Hibbing after high school. There, she raised her family and built lasting connections within the
community. As one of the first generations of women working outside the home, she joined the
workforce during WWII at a munitions factory and later enjoyed a career as a bank teller,
spanning many years and leaving a lasting impact on those she encountered.
Her dedication to her faith was evident through her active involvement at Our Saviors Lutheran
Church in Hibbing, where she served faithfully as part of the Altar Guild and the annual White
Elephant Sale. Jeane’s philanthropic spirit extended beyond the church, where she generously
volunteered at the hospital and was an active member of both the Sons of Norway and the
Eastern Star, cherishing the camaraderie and shared belief in serving others. Even into her 90’s
she continued her volunteer work with the Make a Difference Day organization, impacting the
lives of others for the better.
In 1970, Jeane married Michael “George” Maras and together they shared many wonderful
years. Their shared love of travel took them on adventures across the country in their travel
trailer. Settling in the southwest for their retirement years, they formed lifelong friendships and
created lasting memories.
Known for her optimism and knack for connecting with people of all ages, she was a great
conversationalist, possessed a witty sense of humor, and showed kindness to all she knew.
Above all, Jeane cherished her family, finding happiness in the company of her children,
grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and
cherished memories that will echo through generations to come.
Jeane is survived by her loving children, Cheryl (Robert) Sorci and Stephen Gibson, along with
her grandchildren, Cara (Bill) Coster, Gina (Perry) Heles, Sara Gibson, and Kelly Hagan, and
great-grandchildren, Kristina Coster, Robert Coster, Sophia Heles, and Joseph Heles. She will be
fondly membered by her nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and her beloved husband, George.
A memorial service honoring Harriet Jean Maras’ extraordinary 99 years will be held at 11:00
AM on Friday, May 10, 2024, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Hibbing. Visitation will begin
one hour prior to the service at 10:00 AM. Pastor Kevin Olson will officiate the service, followed
by interment at Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing.
