James Vernon Mack
February 8th, 1940 – November 11th, 2023
James “Jim” Mack died peacefully at home surrounded by family on November
11th, 2023. James was born to Vernon and Elizabeth (Plyer) Mack on February 8,
1940 in Ashland, WI. His family moved to Cherry, MN in 1953, and that is where
he met the love of his life, Judith “Judy” (Louhi) Mack. They began ‘going steady’
pretty quickly and married September 21, 1957. James was a United States Army
Veteran who served from 1957 until 1960. He also worked as an Operating
Engineer Union Local 49 and Boilermaker Union Local 647 for 40 years. His
greatest joys were his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and pet dogs
(most recently Rocky and Bullwinkle). Jim was an avid outdoorsman since
childhood and enjoyed a lifetime of hunting, fishing, and wandering in the woods
with friends and family. He built a cabin nestled in the pines along the Saint Louis
River for hunting, fishing and riding his four wheelers, snowmobiles and tractor.
Jim worked hard maintaining the cabin property and developing the land to attract
native wildlife. Jim was always in pursuit of adventure and enjoyed sharing his
passion for the land with his friends, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He
had many friends and went out of his way to help those in need. Jim was preceded
in death by his grandparents, parents, Vernon and Elizabeth (Plyer) Mack and
siblings, Marge (Mack) Morinelli, Laura (Mack) Carlson and Thomas Mack. Jim
is survived by his wife of 66 years, Judith (Louhi) Mack, siblings: Mary Kay Leas
and David Mack, children: Julie (Dave) Hendrickson, Kathy Mack, and Paul
(Ginny Richmond) Mack, grandchildren: Jeremy (Lara) Mohawk, Nathan (Erin)
Hendrickson, Justine (Graham) Redshaw, and Jessica (Jacob) Mack Frasier, great-
grandchildren: Jordan, Tinu, Feyi, Joshua, Isaac, Caleb, Chloe, Aria, Reagan,
Wesley, and Malia, and great-great-granddaughter, Adelynn as well as numerous
cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. A celebration of Jim’s life will be held at
2:00 pm Friday, November 24, 2023 at Dougherty Funeral Home in Hibbing.
Interment will be held at the Cherry Cemetery at a later date.
