James Paul “Jim” Mikolich
James P. “Jim” Mikolich, 89, died on Sunday January 22, 2017 in Chisholm, MN. He was born in Leetonia on June 22, 1927, to Frank and Antonia Mikolich. He attended Hibbing Schools and served in the US Navy during World War II, where he participated in Operation Crossroads on Bikini Atoll, Marshall Islands, to test the effect of the Atomic Bomb. Upon his honorable discharge from the service, Jim worked for a time at Boeing Aircraft, then for the railroad for 10 years, and he retired from ISD 701 where he had been a bus driver, groundskeeper and maintenance man. He and Patricia Lorenzatti were united in marriage on Sept. 6, 1952, and they made their home in Hibbing. Jim was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and a 25 year member of the American Legion. The family would like to thank the staff at Heritage Manor for the excellent care they provided for Jim.
He is survived by several cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia, in 1999; his parents; his twin brother, Theodore Mikolich; brothers: Frank and John Mikolich; a sister, Mary Mikolich; and his special friend, Margaret “Nina” Sundberg.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday January 27, 2017 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Hibbing at 11 a.m. Visitation will be in the Dougherty Funeral Home, Thursday, Jan. 26, 2017 from 5 to 7 p.m., with recitation of the rosary at 6:30 pm. The visitation will continue Friday in the church from 10 a.m. until service time. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Hibbing. Military Honors will be accorded by the Mid-Range Honor Guard.
