James D. “Jim” Morrison
James D. Morrison, 92, longtime resident of Hibbing died Saturday, July 4, 2015 at Heritage Manor in Chisholm, MN. He was born on July 16, 1922 to Fred and Mae (Reeve) Morrison in Hibbing. He graduated from Hibbing High School in 1940. During his teen years, he loved playing hockey and played for the city hockey team, they were champions twice. After graduation, he took the Civilian Pilot Training Course at the Hibbing Municipal Airport and loved flying. In 1940 he joined the Army Air Corps and in 1943 he became a fighter pilot, and was chosen to train new recruits. He achieved the rank of 2 nd Lt., by the time the war ended.
Jim came back to Hibbing for a few credits at the Junior College where he met his bride to be. He transferred to the University of Wisconsin, Madison and graduated in 1949 as a mining engineer. Jim belonged to the Engineer’s Club of Minnesota. He worked for Pickands Mathers and Hanna Mining Co., retiring in 1982. After retirement, Jim spent 30 years volunteering as an income tax coordinator for the elderly. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church for 80 plus years where he was an elder and trustee for many years. He belonged to the men’s breakfast club. He was a member of Blue Lodge & Past Venerable Master of the Lodge of Perfection. He was also assistant secretary for the Lodge of Perfection. He was also a member of the Duluth Scottish Rite-32 nd Degree.
After retirement Jim enjoyed many years of playing racquet ball, twice a week with wonderful friends. Last but not least, his special time was family and friends getting together at the cabin on Swan Lake.
In 1948, Jim married Olga Cicchi from Hibbing. They had three children, Curtis (Nancy Bakeman) Morrison, Plymouth, MN, Donald (Verlynn) Morrison, Hibbing, and Paula (Larry) Moore, Austin, TX, eight grandchildren, Adam, Laura, and Jack Morrison, Hollie Morrison, Jodi (Matt) Helander, Katie (Allen) Lenz, Nathan and Nicole Moore; 2 great-grandchildren, Owen James Helander and Dominic William Lenz, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Gould Morrison, sisters Kathryn, Augusta, and Dorothy.
Funeral services for Jim will be held at 2:00pm, Wednesday, July 15, 2015 at the First Presbyterian Church in Hibbing. The Rev. Jim Deters will officiate. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral at the church on Wednesday. A private family interment will take place at the Maple Hill Cemetery following the reception at the church on Wednesday. Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing.
