Janice A. “Jan” Shimek, 76, longtime resident of Hibbing passed away Sunday January 8, 2017 at Fairview Range Medical Center in Hibbing. She was born in East Grand Forks, MN to Frank and Helen Shimek on June 28, 1940. Jan began her career as owner/operator of her hair salon. Upon her retirement, Jan then chose to continue employment with K-Mart, corporation in Hibbing. She truly enjoyed being outdoors, fishing with her brother Greg and spending precious time with her family and friends. She was a very avid fan of the Vikings and twins-never missed a televised game. She was a wonderful, care-giving person having touched the hearts of many people and will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
Jan is survived by sisters Shirley Traeger, Hibbing, Sharon Gustafson, Hibbing, sister-in-law Delores Shimek, Hibbing, brothers, Ron (Carol) Shimek, Grand Rapids, MN and Greg Shimek, Baxter, MN; nephews, Phil (Karen), Mike (Heidi), Ronnie (Jennifer) and Rex “Guffy”, nieces, Michelle (Mark), Mandi, Sabrina, Nancy, Terri, Cheryl, Debbie, and Bobby (Robert). Jan was preceded in death by her parents, very dear friend, “E.B.”, her brother Joe and nephew Joel.
As per Jan’s request, no funeral or memorial service will take place. A private Memorial Mass for family will be held. Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing.
