Joan V. Nehiba, 85, Hibbing, died Thur., Jan. 12, 2017 in Hibbing, MN, surrounded by her family. She was born Feb. 11, 1931 in Bear River, MN to John and Hilda Sandberg. She married Richard A. Nehiba on March 30, 1951 and then made their home in Hibbing. Joan was a dedicated homemaker who loved to treat her family to her many delicious dishes. Her love of nature led to spending much time outdoors while fishing, grouse hunting, walking, and working in her flower gardens which were her special pride. She knew the names of many of the trees and birds that she saw and enjoyed teaching them to her children and grandchildren. In earlier years, Joan enjoyed playing volleyball, bowling, and dancing. In her later years, spending time with her grandchildren gave her much joy, especially reading to them. Always attached to her roots, visits back to the Bear River area were also special for her. She is survived by her children: Elizabeth (James) Forrestal of Winterville, NC; Daniel (Cheryl) Nehiba of Hibbing and Steven (Cindy) Nehiba of Mt. Iron, MN; a sister Lietta (Bill) Eichholz of Hibbing; a brother Lenny (Diane) Sandberg of Side Lake, MN; 6 grandchildren: Danelle (Nick) Ongaro, Lindsey (Bill) Jones, Katie Rose Nehiba, David (Heather) Hallila, Diane (Kevin) Passero and Melissa Van Loon and 11 great grandchildren: Geno and Lucia Ongaro; Dylan, Tyler, Christian, and Calista Hallila; Lola and Cooper Passero; Dacotah and Brianna Hatfield; Elijah VanLoon.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Richard, and a brother Norman Sandberg.
The family would like to deeply thank the Hillcrest Nashwauk staff for the special care she received while living there the past year.
Funeral services for Joan will be held at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, January 21, 2017 in the Dougherty Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 2:30 p.m. until service time in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or any other charity of the donor’s choice. Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing.
