Joan H. Nowak age 80 of Hibbing passed away Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at Fairview Range Medical Center in Hibbing. She was born August 23, 1943, in Hibbing to Tauno and Margaret (Palso) Sandberg. Joan was a graduate of Hibbing High School. She was a member of the 4-H club and placed during the state competition in the song and dance competition. On March 23rd, 1964, Joan was married to Michael Nowak, they were married in Hibbing and after were married through St. Josephs Catholic Church in Marble. Much later on December 10, 2003 they had their marriage renewed at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Hibbing. Joan was a longtime member of Holy Trinity completing her confirmation there. She also served as a council member. Following Holy Trinity’s closure Joan attended First Lutheran Church in Hibbing. She was a member of the VFW Women’s Auxiliary and volunteered her time with the American Cancer Society. Joan worked at Cobb Cook Grocery for years and later was part owner/operator of Mikes Heating and Sheetmetal with her husband Michael. Joan enjoyed cooking, flower gardening and travelling with family and friends, especially across the Midwest, following her cousin June’s band, Country Junction. Joan was a mom to many more than her children. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Michael James Nowak, children, US Marine Corps Lance CPL Michael Joseph (Lori Weiss) Nowak, Richard Nowak, Edward (Mara) Nowak, Lynnette (Michael Alan Sr.) Nowak, grandchildren, Jesse, Michael Christian, Josie, Taylor and Tanner, three great-grandchildren with one on the way and numerous nieces, nephews, close friends and travelling companions, sister-in-law, Donna Nowak, Cheryl Minter, Laura Jean Glad and cousin, June Randall. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, Donald Sandberg, Randy Gibson and grandson, US Marine Corps CPL Travis Nowak. A funeral service will be held 11:00 am Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at First Lutheran Church in Hibbing. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at church. Interment will be held at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing. Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons, Taylor Skalsky, Tanner Nowak, Michael Christian Nowak, Jessie Nowak, nephews, Shawn Pucely, Jason Pucely and cousin, Jason Randall.
