John Peter “ Dundy” Dundovich
John P. “Dundy” Dundovich, 90, lifelong Keewatin resident, died Wednesday, October 24, 2012, at Fairview University Medical Center—Mesabi in Hibbing. He was born in Keewatin on February 22, 1922, to Peter and Barbara Dundovich. He graduated from Keewatin High School and was united in marriage to Julia Kuriatnyk on Sept. 26, 1942. John worked as an electrician for Hanna Mining Company and National Steel Pellet Company, retiring in 1978. He always talked about how much he enjoyed working in the mine and had many stories to tell about it. He played baseball for the Keewatin Klippers and was known across the Iron Range as “Iron Man” Dundovich for his pitching skills. One of his most memorable days was when he pitched a double header against Mt Iron, striking out 21 in the first game and 11 in the second. He was inducted into the Nashwauk—Keewatin Hall of Fame in 2006. Known to many as “Pickles,” he enjoyed “bumming”, going out to eat, casino trips, parties at the family cabin on Swan Lake and spending time with his grandchildren. He was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed the Vikings and Twins and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events.
He is survived by a son, Michael (Kathy) Dundovich of San Diego, CA; two daughters, Patricia Dundovich of Minneapolis and Pamela (Wayne) LaBine of Keewatin; nine grandchildren: Ashley, Allison, and Melissa Dundovich, Stephanie Moe, Jill, John and Joy LaBine, Greg (Kristen) and Jeff Nisius; two great-grandchildren, Justin and Addison Nisius; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Julia, in 2001; a daughter and son-in-law, Phyllis and George Nisus; his sister, Ann Hedblom; and his parents. He will be sadly missed by all.
A private funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2012, followed by interment in Maple Hill Cemetery, Hibbing. Friends are invited to join the family at the Vene Qua in Keewatin, from 2—5 PM Saturday for a reception that will be held in John’s honor. Arrangements are with Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing.
