John J. Fiori

John J. Fiori, 97, Hibbing, died Wed. Feb. 8. 2012, in Hibbing, surrounded by 3 of his daughters.  He was born April 23, 1914 in Hibbing, the son of Dominic and Filomena Fiori.  John graduated from Hibbing High School and was an Army veteran of World War II.  Stationed in London, he had served as an Army medic and was a part of the D-Day Invasion at Normandy.  He then advanced with the troops through Italy, Germany.  While in the army he also played saxophone in the Army Band.  He married Mildred Jean “Peggy” Allison, in the Immaculate Conception Church in Hibbing on June 22, 1946.  He and his brothers were known locally as excellent golfers teaming up as the Fiori Foursome in both golf and curling.  Other sports he participated in were bocce, the Hibbing hockey leagues, and baseball.  A man who lived each day to the fullest he also played in the Hibbing Band and with his brother Queenie, he played in Babe’s Trio.  Many will remember John from working at Gambucci Hardware until he was 87 years old and being a bus driver to the Side Lake area.
He is survived by his wife Mildred “Peggy” Fiori, daughters: Bonita Fiori, Nancy (Patrick) McKenzie, Ruth (Kevin) Milani and Patty (Frank) Baratto all of Hibbing, his grandchildren: Katie, Shaun, and Molly McKenzie, Chris, Jenny and Emily Milani and Nicole and Maria Baratto, along with many nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers Angelo “Red”, Sistilio “Sis” and Quentin “Queenie” Fiori and his sisters Inez Bianconi and Olive Fiori.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Hibbing.  The Rev. Anthony Craig will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial.  Visitation will be in church from 10 a.m. until service time.  Burial will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery with military honors accorded by the VFW Post 8510.  Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing.
