John “Jack” Lyon
March 8, 1931 February 22, 2024
John (Jack or Cub) Lyon peacefully passed away surrounded by his family on February 22, 2024. He was born in the Bruce Location (outside of Chisholm, MN) to George and Alma Lyon on March 8, 1931.
He graduated from Hibbing High School with the Class of 1949, and went on to further his education at Hibbing Community College where he also played football. In 1958, he graduated from the University of MN Twin Cities with a degree in mechanical engineering. Jack proudly served as a Marine during the Korean War.
On December 29, 1956, he married the love of his life, Theodora (Teddy) Walsh.
Jack started his work career with Clyde Ironworks in Duluth. The couple moved back to the Iron Range and settled in Cooley raising their three children. His Iron Range work career began with Hanna Mining and 30 years later he retired from National Steel.
In 1971, Jack built the first phase of their log cabin on Swan Lake. After adding on to the cabin, the family moved there in 1972 as their permanent home. Many happy years were spent enjoying the lake, the varied wildlife the seasons brought, and the wonderful neighbors. Hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, curling, traveling, playing cribbage, and building/fixing things provided hours of enjoyment and fun memories.
Jack was a member of the Elks Club of Hibbing, Engineers Club of Northern MN, The Algonquin, and The United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Teddy; daughter-in-law, Debbie Lyon of Scottsdale, AZ, daughter, Cindy (David) Book of Big Lake, MN, son, Craig (Jean) Lyon of New Prague, MN; grandchildren, Kelly (Tyler), Tommy (Daniella), Katie (Jamie), Laura, Ben, Jonathan, Jenica (Brian), Alexa (Lucas), Andrew, Annalise; and three great grandchildren, Kamryn, Leon, and Thomas.
