John Purkat
John Purkat, 90, Hibbing, died on his 90th birthday, Friday, August 16, 2013, at home. He was born in Hibbing on August 16, 1923, to Martin and Frances Purkat. John was extremely proud to serve his country as a member of the US Army during World War II, having served in the Philippines. He was united in marriage to Myrtle Johnson of Keewatin on February 2, 1946 in Hibbing. John worked as a shovel operator for MA Hanna Mining Company, retiring as a foreman. He was an active member of VFW Post 8510, having served as a past commander and member of the color guard. He volunteered his time for many years at the post with various tasks. John was also part of the All State Team 1988—89 Post Commanders with VFW Post 8510. His hobbies were building campers and toppers for pickup trucks and he had a passion for aviation. He built, restored and piloted small planes, including his 1937 Waco biplane which is now on display at the Icelandic Aviation Museum.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Myrtle, of Hibbing; a son, John Robert (Marlene) Purkat of Annandale, VA; three daughters: Randy (Denny) Belluzzo of Hibbing, Jane Rule of Durham, NC, and Susan (Robin) Wilson of Durham, NC; six grandchildren: Tiphanie (Paul) Stefanski, Lacey (Eric) Lynd, Nicholas Purkat, Rachel (Steve) Jameson, Alex (Ashley) Hilliard, and Jenny Hilliard; and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Nancy Purkat; his parents; brothers Martin and Bobby; a granddaughter, Jessica; and a son-in-law, Eric Rule.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 AM Tuesday August 20, 2013, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Hibbing. Visitation will be in the church on Tuesday from 10—11 AM. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery with full military honors accorded by VFW Post 8510 Color Guard. Arrangements are with Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing.
