Joseph M. Stukel, 101, Hibbing, died Tues. Aug. 28, 2012 in Hibbing.  He was born Nov. 10, 1910 on the family farm in Gheen, MN, the 8th child of Martin and Gertrude Stukel. Joseph and his family moved by horse and cart to Virginia, MN where Joseph attended school and played football, basketball and swam.  His love of music started at a very young age and continued all through his life.  He was a charter member of the musicians union started in 1934.  He moved to Hibbing in 1939 where he played in the city band for 30 years.  Joe played with numerous bands and orchestras around the USA, Europe and Hawaii playing numerous different instruments.  In 1996 he was inducted into the Ironworld Polka Hall of Fame as a sideman musician.  He entertained at many range nursing homes and senior citizen’s events, he even played the organ at Hillcrest Suites, where he lived for the last 3 years, for the residents.  He worked for Central Laundry, being the manager for both the Hibbing and Bemidji offices.  He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church where he volunteered as an usher. His love of the outdoors led him to enjoy hunting and fishing.  A special heartfelt thank you to all of the staff, past and present, at Hillcrest Suites.  They were all loving and caring and Joe loved them and the residents.
He is survived by his daughter Jo (Don) Imbertson of Side Lake, MN, grandchildren; Heidi (Dan) Galbraith and Daniel Imbertson both of Mpls, MN, and great grandchildren; Cole and Brady Galbraith.  He was preceded in death by his two wives June (Kierig) Stukel in 1977 and Ann (Lehman) Stukel in 1994, his parents, 2 brothers Tony and Martin, and 5 sisters; Mary, Ann, Angela, Julia and Gertrude.
Funeral services will be held Sat. Sept. 1, 2012 at 11:00 am., in the Immaculate Conception Church.  The Rev. Anthony Craig will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial.  Visitation will be from 10 a.m., until service time, in the church. Burial will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery.  Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home.
