Joyce Mae Gandsey, 91, of Hibbing, MN, passed away peacefully at Aurora on France Assisted Living in Edina, MN. She was born in Hibbing, MN, on October 27, 1932, to Henry and Eileen (Gustafson) LaCoursiere. Joyce and her family grew up in the Cobb Cook neighborhood and attended Hibbing High School, graduating in 1950. She marched with and played drums in the HHS band. After school, she was proud to leave Hibbing for a couple years on her own and work in Washington DC for the federal government. She moved back home and rekindled a relationship with Peter Gandsey, whom she later married on March 30, 1953. They started their family raising three children and soon after she started her career with Hanna Mining. Joyce was a secretary with the company for 23 years and was an exceptionally hard worker. She spent a lot of time traveling and camping with Peter and her family. They had set a goal to visit all 50 states. Joyce enjoyed fishing on Lake Kabetogama and exploring other great spots in northern Minnesota. She had a great love for her area and where she was from. They also liked to vacation in Florida during the winter. Joyce loved to read and work on her house in Hibbing which they originally built in 1961. There was always yard work, remodeling or projects to be done.
Joyce is survived by her children Pamela (Bob) Nordeen, Linda (Michael) Damman and Jim (Jayne) Gandsey, grandchildren Justin (Nikki) Gandsey, Jillian (Sonny) Johnson, Kristin (Joel) Cramer and Greg Damman, six great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and siblings Shirley Deatherage, Phyllis Vine, Royden "Bud" LaCoursiere, Marilyn Verant and Gail Graham.
There will be a funeral service at the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing on Wednesday, January 10th, 2024, at 5:00PM. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service starting at 4:00PM. Interment will take place on Thursday at Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing.
