Joyce Marie Schwartz went to heaven to be with our Lord on July 24 th , 2023.
Joyce was born in Wagner, SD on April 13, 1936. She was the oldest of 4 children
born to Ethel and Arch Hawley. Growing up in a small farmhouse, she was very
close to her sister and 2 brothers. As such, family was always Joyce’s main focus.
She met and married the love of her life, Donald Schwartz, on January 19, 1957.
They moved to Hibbing, MN in December of 1959 where they continued to build
their family. Joyce was an avid and wonderful cook, but baking was her “hobby”.
At any point in time you could find her in the kitchen baking bread, rolls,
cupcakes, pies, cinnamon rolls, angel food cakes or cookies. Chocolate chip
cookies were a staple in the house with her grandkids running to seek them out
when arriving for a visit. Her Great-grandkids even called her “Grandma Cookie”.
One of Joyce’s many gifts was hospitality, warmly welcoming everyone who
visited into their home. The Schwartz household was a popular place for their
children’s friends to gather and she was always happy they were there, ready to
cook for them and listen with interest to their stories. A world class listener,
Joyce would listen as a problem was worked through, without pushing advice,
asking questions with interest to make you think.
We will miss her gentle spirit, funny sayings (joycey-isms), her back scratches,
shoulder “bites” and fierce love for all of us.
Joyce is survived by: sister Carol Menor (Frank); sister-in-law Norma Hawley
(Joyce’s late brother Larry Hawley); husband of 66 years – Donald; 3 children –
