Kathleen (Kata) Mattson
February 5, 1950 – February 12, 2018
Kathleen (Kata) Mattson 68, a lifelong Nashwauk resident died Monday February 12, 2018 at her home surrounded by family, after a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born in Hibbing to Mike and Julia (Plesha) Stupar on February 5, 1950. Kathy had been employed with the Greenway School District as a bus driver for over 30 years. She watched her bus kids grow up attending many of their graduations. She also volunteered for many years with Meals on Wheels. She was a member of St. Basil Vasilije of Ostrog Serbian Eastern Orthodox Church in Chisholm.
Her life was dedicated and devoted to her family, friends, and neighbors, always giving of herself and asking for nothing in return. She loved hosting all Holiday family gatherings, preparing everyone’s favorite dish. She was also known for her infamous potica, making sure each one was made to perfection.
She spent a lifetime caring and giving to so many. Her animal “friends” were equally important. As she walked the streets of Nashwauk with her dog, she would carry treats for the neighboring dogs. Kathy gave to the Humane Society as part of her love for animals.
One of her favorite past times was going to bingo with friends & on occasion, a casino trip or two but most of all, she enjoyed every moment spent with her 3 beloved grandchildren. She was passionate about their activities which included, attending hockey and baseball games, choir concerts, dance recitals, etc. She was very proud of their academic achievements, always rewarding them. They were “her world” and she treasured every single moment with them.
Kathy is survived by her loving son and daughter-in-law, Chuck (Stacey Frider) Mattson, Hibbing; siblings, RoseAnn Urbick, Hibbing, Barbara Branum, Buck Lake, and Tom (Brenda Pascuzzi) Stupar, Hibbing, grandchildren, Dylan, Emily and Morgan Mattson, niece and nephew, Scott and Stacy Brazier, great niece and nephews, Deion Harris, Amaiyah Robinson, Chazz Brazier, uncle, Pete Stupar, Nashwauk and many extended family and friends and her beloved dog, Mindy.
Kathy is preceded in death by her husband, Gary Mattson, parents, brother, George Stupar, niece Natasha Urbick and aunt, Sophie Chupurdia, brother-in-law, Clyde Mattson.
She will truly be missed and remembered by all who knew her for her loving, compassionate, and caring nature.
Our family extends a special “Thank You” to Barbara. Your unconditional love and dedicated care was exceptional and will never be forgotten. Also, thank you Sandy & Boona, your acts of kindness and care were deeply appreciated. Father Radomir, thank you for your prayers and blessings.
As per Kathy’s wishes, a private funeral service was held with the Rev. Fr. Radomir Plavsic officiating. Burial will be in the Nashwauk Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home.
