Leland Duane Tobey, 83, longtime resident of Hibbing died on Monday, June 3, 2024, at Buhl Carefree Living. He was born June 22,1940, to Lee and Mary (Linn) Tobey in Pequot Lakes, MN. He graduated from Greenway High School in 1958. After graduation Leland proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. He was united in marriage to Frances Barkis on October 22, 1966. Leland was employed and later retired as a maintenance mechanic with National Steel in Keewatin. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, Shifters Car club, and the Hibbing bowling league. An avid sports fan, Leland loved watching his grandkids' games -- especially baseball -- along with an annual ballet recital. He had a talent and passion for restoring classic cars and could fix almost anything around the house or on a vehicle.
He is survived by his children: Lori (Punky) Kolden, Brian Tobey, Chris Tobey, and Cliff Tobey; his beloved companion of over 15 years Thelma Slattery; siblings Anita (Rick) Morgan, Janice (Gary) Waldrop, Gail (Dan) Sutherland, Eldon Tobey and Darrel Tobey. Leland was blessed with grandchildren Zakkary (Toni) Bandemer, Sydney (Asher) Howell, Hunter Tobey, Andy Kolden, and Austen (Kayla) Kolden, and great-grandchildren Quinn and Kamryn Bandemer, Eleanor Howell, Fritz and Arlo Kolden. He also had many nieces and nephews.
Leland was preceded in death by his wife Frances; his parents Lee and Mary; his sister Barbara Smith, brother Dennis Tobey, nephew Dana Tobey, and daughter-in-law Monica Tobey.
Services will be on Thursday, June 13, 2024, at Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing with visitation at 10:00 am, funeral at 11:00 am, military honors at cemetery, then luncheon at funeral home. The Rev. Fr. Bill Skarich will officiate. Interment will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing; with all arrangements through Dougherty Funeral Home.
