Lorraine B. Mertens, 94, longtime resident of Hibbing died Saturday, July 15, 2023, at New Perspective Senior Living in Cloquet, MN. She had moved to Cloquet in assisted living to be closer to her family. Lorraine was born May 27, 1929 to Henry and Alice (Haugen) Hall in Staples, MN. She entered the Sacrament of Marriage with Lloyd Mertens on December 29, 1949, in Staples, MN. A homemaker by trade, Lorraine was very active in her church. She was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Hibbing. She would often volunteer at the church. She was a member of the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary. Lorraine enjoyed puzzles, sewing, oil painting, and was known as the Chinese Checkers Master at her assisted living facility in Cloquet. No one could defeat her. Lorraine’s favorite pastime was decorating her doors and windows. Each and every holiday, you would find that theme littered throughout the entire facility. She enjoyed it very much.
Lorraine is survived by her children, Diane (Art Gibbs) Peterson, Green Valley, AZ, Alice (Arnold) Workman, Kelly Lake, MN, Debbie (Milan) Bigo, Ashland, WI, Douglas (MarySue) Mertens, Eveleth, MN, and Christine (Timothy) O’Hara, Cloquet, MN, her two sisters, Norma Minor, Hibbing, and Lois Merterns, Staples, MN. 9 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her son, Stanley Mertens, husband, Lloyd Mertens in 1999, parents, Henry and Alice (Haugen) Hall, her granddaughter, Shana Pfeilstickler, three brothers, Leonard, Lloyd, and Lawrence Hall, and her sister, Lavina Hitzmann
Funeral services for Lorraine will be 12:00 pm, Friday, July 21, 2023 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Hibbing. The Rev. Fr. Daniel Weiske will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial. The Rev. Fr. Charles Flynn will con-celebrate. Visitation will be from 11:00 am until the 12:00 noon funeral Mass at the church on Friday. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery of Hibbing. Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing.
