Marlys Mae Dieter
Chisholm, Minnesota –
Marlys Mae Dieter passed away on Sunday, July 19, 2015 at
Heritage Manor Nursing Home of Chisholm.
Marlys was born on May 6
th,
1928 in Roseau, MN to Christine Berggren and Louis
Elmer Halverson. She was the youngest of four children and grew up on the family farm
one mile north of town, with her eldest sister Elaine (John Anderson), brother Curtis
Halverson, and sister June (Harold Lung). She attended Roseau schools and graduated
in 1946. She worked briefly at the Roseau court house and hospital before marrying
Van Dieter on August 7th, 1948. They lived initially in Mpls while her husband finished his schooling at the U of M, before returning to Roseau where Van worked for Jim Helgeson in the furniture and funeral home businesses. They resided in Roseau until 1963 when they moved to Hibbing. The following year the family moved to Chisholm where Van worked for Rupp furniture and funeral home, and later Dougherty funeral home of Hibbing. During these years, Marlys stayed at home and attended the family.
Marlys and Van had four children: Jeffrey (Jennifer Mumm), Michael (Mary McDowell), Mary (Steve Newhouse) and Mark (Andrya Maldonado), and they later enjoyed the 19 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren from these marriages.
Marlys was active in the Chisholm Baptist church and appreciate the fellowship it
offerred her, friendships with her neighbors and others in the community.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Curtis, husband Van, and grandchildren Hannah Beth Dieter, Peder Van Newhouse and son in law Steve Newhouse.
Besides taking a close interest in all of her extended family, she enjoyed serving, music, drama and reading. Together they enjoyed supporting missions and she had a
special interest in Jews and their stories.
Marlys continued to love her family to the end of her life - a debt we can never
repay. Along with her husband Van, they made great sacrifices for their family that
the children and grandchildren treasure. Proverbs 31:28 speaks of a woman whose children “rise up and call her blessed.” The children of Marlys Dieter publicly express this of their mother.
Funeral services for Marlys will be held 11:00am, Friday, July 24, 2015 at the Chisholm Baptist Church. The Rev. Dan Erickson will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service at the church on Friday. An interment will be in the Moe-Rose Cemetery in Roseau, MN. Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing.
