Mary Altobelli Checco
Beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt, Mary Altobelli Checco, age 97, passed away peacefully June 17, 2015 at Edina Care Center in Edina, MN. She will be fondly remembered for her infectious laugh, expressive mannerisms and her endless love for family and friends. Mary had a knack for making everyone feel special and greeted those she loved with kisses, hugs and huge platters of ravioli.
Mary Magdalene Altobelli was born on December 15, 1917, to Alberto and Filomena Mansueto Altobelli in Virginia, MN. In October 1938, she married Louis Checco, and they made their home in Hibbing. Louis passed away in 1999, but Mary continued to reside in Hibbing until she moved to Bloomington at the age of 93 to live with her son, Tom, and his family.
Mary enjoyed life to the fullest. She loved to dance, and at a young age would wash floors just to earn a nickel for an evening out at the local dance hall. She was still dancing at age 90, and there is no doubt she is kicking up her heels in heaven right now. She also loved playing cards and made it her mission to teach her grandkids how to win at Smear. An active community volunteer, Mary worked with the Greyhound Bus Museum and on church circles. She also served on the Hibbing Election Board and was a member of Ladies of the Moose.
Mary is survived by sons Al (Carole Ann) of Huntington Beach, CA and Tom (Marcella) of Bloomington, MN; grandchildren: Albert, Jr. (Kris) Checco, Rochester, MN; Michelle (Sean) James, Orange, CA; Kristin Checco, Bloomington and Nick (Allison) Checco, Eden Prairie; Great-Grandchildren: Cory and Austin Checco, Nikki James, Ben and Matt TenBroek and Saunie and Celia Checco; Sisters-In-Law, Elvera Johnson, Anoka and Joanne Altobelli, Northfield.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband; by her parents; by a sister, Jenni Hall; and brothers: Nick, Joe, Charlie, and Leonard Altobelli.
A memorial Mass will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, June 25, 2015, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Hibbing. There will be no visitation. Honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Edina Care and Rehab Center, 6200 Xerxes Ave S, Minneapolis, MN 55423. Arrangements are with Dougherty Funeral Home, Hibbing. To leave an online message of condolence, please visit
