Mary Heritage

June 6, 1926 — July 13, 2016

Mary Lou Heritage, 90, died July 13, 2016 in Hibbing with her daughters at her side.  She was born Mary Louise Holmberg to Gustave & Ida (Carlson) Holmberg on June 6, 1926 in Minneapolis and raised in Superior and the Lakeside neighborhood of Duluth.  She graduated from the old Duluth Central High School in 1944 and subsequently worked as a secretary at Duluth Central and Gately’s Store.  In Duluth, she met and married the love of her life, David Heritage.  After starting out in Duluth, Littlefork, and International Falls, the young couple settled in Hibbing in 1952, where they raised their family and spent the rest of their lives.

Mary Lou was a longtime member of the First Lutheran Church, sang in the church choir, and volunteered at the hospital.  She and Dave were proud Hibbing Bluejacket supporters, especially of the marching band.  She enjoyed bowling, shopping, growing flowers, and playing bridge and cribbage.  Above all, Mary Lou was a dedicated and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.  She is remembered for her rhubarb sauce, vegetable soup, schnitzel, chocolate chip cookies, and, often requested, blueberry dessert.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David, in 1993.  She is survived by her daughters, Karen (Jerry) Adam of Keewatin and Karla (Pat) McKenzie of Eveleth; grandsons, Dr. Jeremy (Amber) Adam of Newport, MN and Luke (Shontel) Adam of Keewatin; great grandchildren, Jacob, Rosemary, and David Adam of Newport, MN, and Katie Kinkel and Stella Adam of Keewatin; sister, Margaret (Richard) Bawcom, of Salinas, CA; niece and nephews, Elizabeth (Mark) Layous, Jim (Julie) Bawcom, and John Bawcom, of California.

We extend a heartfelt thank you to Dana Johnson of Rising Sun Vista and Fairview Hospice for the excellent care of Mary Lou.

Services will be held at Dougherty Funeral Home in Hibbing on Monday, July 18th including visitation at 10am and funeral at 11am . Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery.
