MATT BERGAN, JR.
Matt Bergan Jr., 75, who was a well-known and much-loved educator in northern Minnesota for over 3 decades, passed away on Aug. 12 after a brief battle with lymphoma. Matt was born in Nashwauk, MN on September 8, 1937. After earning his education degree from Bemidji State College, Matt began his teaching career at Hibbing High School in 1961. He was famous for his calculus curriculum and could proudly claim many engineers and scientists nation-wide as his ex-students. Matt was also the head baseball coach in Hibbing for over 20 years, taking several teams to the state tournament. Finally, Matt was a prolific and highly-decorated sports official. He was chosen to referee in over one dozen state basketball tournaments, and is a member of the MSHSL Officiating Hall of Fame.
Matt was preceded in death by his father, Matt Sr. and mother, Vivian. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Joan; son, Matt (Lori Jo); brother, Dan (Terri); sister, Gena Shumway; granddaughter, Alexandra; grandson, Zachary; many nieces and nephews; and special friend, Kathy Sterk.
