Maurice J. Wivoda

Maurice J. Wivoda, 85, died Thursday, February 11, 2016 at home with family by his side.  He was born on March 15, 1930 to Thomas and Mary (Calgaro) Wivoda in Goodland, MN.  Maurice married Patricia Herrett in Hibbing on February 13, 1948. Maurice was very proud to say that they were married for 68 years.  The couple made their home in Hibbing and then in 1993 they moved to their lake home on Tank Lake.  Maurice was employed with National Steel as a maintenance mechanic. He was a member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Hibbing.  He enjoyed being outdoors, whether it was cutting wood, hunting, or fishing.  He also was known for a memorable greeting with his big handshake.  Maurice’s favorite passion was playing his guitar everyday.

He is survived by his three children, Sandra Rootes, Hibbing, Gerry Wivoda, Cohasset, MN, and Bill (Crystal) Wivoda, Goodland, MN, two sisters, Frances Fuller, Fairbanks, AK, and Gloris Oikari, Balkan, MN, daughter-in-law, Karen Wivoda, Hibbing, his brother-in-law, Randy Herrett, Hibbing, 10 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Wivoda, wife Patricia Wivoda in 2015, parents, Thomas and Mary (Calgaro) Wivoda, brother, Roland Wivoda, son-in-law, Joe Rootes, and his niece and sister-in-law, Mary Herrett

Funeral services for Maurice will be held at 11:00am, Saturday, February 20, 2016 at the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing.  The Rev. Ben Schori will officiate.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service at the funeral home on Saturday.  The Wivoda family would like to send their heartfelt appreciation to the Fairview staff and the care that Maurice received with his time at Fairview.  Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing.
