Ramona “Rae” J. Kammermeyer
Ramona J. Kammermeyer, 84, Hibbing Southview resident passed away on Friday, August 24, 2012 of cancer at the Guardian Angels Health and Rehabilitation Center in Hibbing. She was born on July 25, 1928 to Kenneth and Monica (Walsh) Smart in Chinook, MT and turned out to be a real looker. She married and had three children. A disappointment was that her children all lived so far away. She attended school in Hill City, then moved out of state and became a telephone operator out west in Portland, OR. Ramona was a terrific dancer and in her day loved to party, especially on opening of fishing season. Ramona spent several years in Pierz, Little Falls, and Hibbing. She also lived in Daytona Beach, FL., where she opened a café in a beach hotel. Her children said she had a touch of religion, and lead a life of enrichment to others. She never harmed a soul who didn’t have it coming. Later in life she became a furniture and interior home consultant. Ramona had a gift for what looked right. She was a lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW Auxiliaries. Her children say she loved to cook and did so with them and her extended family and friends whenever possible. A pet peeve of hers was when obituaries were written they always ended with; “in lieu of flowers the family should blah, blah, blah”. Ramona loved flowers and said family, friends, and the deceased’s soul needed to see them and smell them at the funeral. As the poem Invictus states, this lovely audacious woman was the “Master of her fate” and most surely the “Captain of her soul”.
She is survived by her three children, Jerome Kammermeyer, Naples, NC., James Kammermeyer, Anchorage, AK., and Judy Nero, Orange City, FL., brother, Herb (Sandy) Kammermeyer, Hibbing, MN., five sisters, Kay (Dick) Campbell, Hibbing, MN., Joy (Don) Sanders, Andover, MN., Sharon (Bill) Lamere, Cherry, MN., Norma (Arne) Link, Anchorage, AK., and Melodie (Gene) Lesetmoe, Ham Lake, MN., five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and her numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her siblings, Dar, Kenneth, Bud, and Pretz.
