Robert W. “Bob” Hawkinson
Robert W. “Bob” Hawkinson, 69, Bear River, died Saturday, February 14, 2015, at Solvay Hospice House in Duluth. He was born in Hibbing on April 18, 1945, to Boyd and Rowena Hawkinson. After high school, Bob was drafted into the US Army. He served in Vietnam as an aviation mechanic as part of the Army’s 9th Infantry Air Mobile unit. He was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart. Bob and Kathrine Edblom were united in marriage on Oct. 5, 1968, in Cook, MN and they made their home in Bear River. During his working career, Bob worked construction in Chicago for several years and also as a logger before working as a maintenance mechanic at Thistledew Boys Camp. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post in Cook and the American Legion in Mesa, Arizona where he and Kathrine spent their winters. Bob’s first love was his family, especially his grandchildren. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting.
He is survived by his wife, Kathrine, of Bear River; a son, Wesley (Cheryl) Hawkinson, of Silver Bay; a daughter, Stacy (Jeff) Ohmann, of Cromwell; a sister, Edith (Zig) Tauginas of Florida; and five grandchildren: Colton, Logan, and Jade Hawkinson and Katie and Benny Ohmann; and by numerous nieces and nephews. Robert was preceded in death by his parents.
