Robert Clark Mickelson
R. Clark Mickelson, 83, lifelong resident of Hibbing, died Saturday, June 18, 2016, at home. He was born on July 2, 1932, to Roy E. and Ethel (Neely) Mickelson in Hibbing. He attended Hibbing Schools and graduated from Hibbing High School. Clark proudly served his country for three years with the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. After the war, Clark was employed as a carpenter with Erickson Lumber in Hibbing, and later he formed Mickelson’s Construction as his business. He married Betty Arlene Oja on March 1, 1952, in Hibbing. He was a former member of St. James Episcopal Church in Hibbing, Hibbing Curling Club, Bocce Ball Club and Hibbing Moose Club. Clark enjoyed learning and in his 70’s he audited physics classes at Hibbing Community College as a “hobby.” He also was an avid sports fan who faithfully followed the Minnesota Twins, Wild, and Vikings.
He is survived by his children: Robert (Ellen) Mickelson Jr., Kitzville, MN, Craig (Bonnie) Mickelson, Blackduck, MN, and Brian (Maria) Mickelson, Cambridge, MN; a brother, Maurice “Mick” (Sandy) Mickelson, New Hope, MN; 11 grandchildren: Jesse Mickelson, Jamie Mickelson, Kelly Mickelson, Nicole Roebuck, Stacy Edland, Kim VanGestel, Alyssa Lind, Anthony Mickelson, Tyler Venne, Ryan Venne, and Carter Venne; by seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Clark was preceded in death by two daughters, Lori Titus and Susan Venne; by his wife, Betty Mickelson; his parents; two brothers, Roy and James Mickelson; and two sisters, Jane Atkins and Dorothy Eckles.
Funeral services for Clark will be 11 AM, Friday, June 24, 2016, at St. James Episcopal Church in Hibbing. Visitation will be in church on Friday for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery of Hibbing with full military honors accorded by Mid-Range Honor Guard. Arrangements are with Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing.
