Roberta L. Odegaard, 88, Hibbing, died Monday, May 13, 2013 in Hibbing. She was born Sept 14, 1924 in Chisholm, MN to Matt and Mary Gersich. Roberta graduated from the Hibbing General Hospital nursing program in 1943. They specifically trained nurses for work overseas, but in Roberta’s case, she was assigned to work in Hibbing as an intensive care nurse because of the need here. She had worked at both the Hibbing General Hospital and the Mesabi Regional Medical Center, now known as the Fairview University Medical Center. A devoted mother, Roberta loved to knit and cook for her family. In her free time she loved to read, work crossword puzzles or cheer on the Minnesota Vikings.
She is survived by her children Fred “Kip” Odegaard III, Jean M. Collins, John “Ode” Odegaard, Paul (Mary Jo) Odegaard and James (Paula) Odegaard all of Hibbing, grandchildren: Tara Leslie, Ian (Sarah) Collins, Bryleigh (Dan) Starich, Aubrey Collins, Travis (Sara) Odegaard, Jeremy (Jessica) Odegaard, Matt (Jessica) Odegaard and Luke (Rhianna) Odegaard and her great grandchildren Jace Leslie, Wyatt Collins, Nathan Paul Odegaard and Kaiden Odegaard.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters Mary Ahlfors, Sophie DeFonso, Anne Zobitz, Rose Claesgens, Pauline Palazzari, Betty Gleim, Bernadine Johnson and brothers Adolph and Matt Gersich .
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Hibbing. The Rev. Brian Lederer will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial. Visitation will be in the church from 10 am until service time. Burial will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery with her grandchildren acting as pallbearers. Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home.
