Rose Crnkovich

d. December 28, 2014

Rose Crnkovich, 97, of Hibbing died on Sunday, December 28, 2014 at Guardian Angels Health and Rehab Center.
Rose was born in Penobscot Hill near Hibbing, MN to Stephan and Mildred (Zobenica) Borovac on August 18, 1917 and had been a Hibbing resident for 97 years. She was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, and taught the Wednesday Release classes for over 15 years. She was a member of the ladies auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus and the VFW. Rose enjoyed volunteering at the weekly Leisure Hills (now Guardian Angels) sing-a long, and with the Greyhound Bus Origin Museum. She and her husband Tony helped to preserve the Slavic culture on the Iron Range by devoting over 50 years to teaching tambura instruments to the young and old. Rose was the behind-the-scenes wife who helped her husband in his drive to educate people about the tambura and the Slavic culture. At 65 years old, she started playing the tambura herself and was a member of an adult group of tamburitzans in Hibbing which Tony instructed. Slavic music was a major part of the Crnkovich family life, and many fun times were had together—all packed with beautiful memories.
Rose’s family meant everything to her. Even though her children moved to other states over 40 years ago, they kept in close contact with each other and Rose through frequent phone calls to their mom. She would then convey what each one was doing so that everyone knew what was going on in each other’s lives even though thousands of miles separated them. A very special thanks to her niece, Florine Luther, for all the years she helped care for her aunt. Without her help over the past years, Rose would not have been able to stay in her home until she was 96 years old.
Rose is survived by her three children, Gregory (Laurie) Crnkovich (New Mexico), Bunnie (Jim) Moscatelli (California), and Paul Stephans (Missouri); six grandchildren, Ann Marie Chavez, Denee Golliheair, Derek Crnkovich, Steven Crnkovich, Roxanne Stephans, and Tyler Stephans; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Tony; sisters Kathryn Pistilli (Hibbing); Ann Vukich and Mary Gianini (Chisholm); and brother George Borovac.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 19, 2015 at the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Hibbing. Visitation will be from 10 a.m.  until service time in the church.  Donations can be made to the Hibbing Historical Society Museum, 400 East 23rd Street, Hibbing, MN 55746 or the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 2310 7th Avenue East, Hibbing, MN 55746.
