Sharon Darlene Williams
Sharon D. Williams, 71, lifelong resident of Hibbing died Thursday, August 10, 2017 at home in Hibbing. She was born on May 21, 1946 to Simon Williams and Mary Jane (Turner) (later Patterson) in Cass Lake, MN. By the age of 2 years, Sharon was adopted by Charles Vernon “Vern” Patterson, husband to Mary Jane and adoptive father to Sharon and her sister Patricia. The family settled in a neighborhood of Hibbing, MN. Sharon Patterson attended primary and secondary school in Hibbing. She excelled at academics and singing. She sang in many high school musicals. Sharon earned two Associate of Art degrees after graduating from high school. Sharon married George Gross in January of 1965. The couple had three children; Lisa, Kenneth, and Matthew Gross. George worked in Hibbing mining while Sharon was a stay at home mother. They divorced after 10 years of marriage. Homemaking was not her strong suit. Sharon was employed as a counselor, employment coach for AEOA Workforce Center in Hibbing, she also was a longtime PCA, and was previously employed at MDI in Hibbing. She was a member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwa. She loved her friends, adventures, and storytelling. Sharon loved listening to music, especially Elvis Presley. She enjoyed shopping, drawing, coloring, singing, animals, and reading as some of her favorite pastimes. But, her favorite pastime was her dog, Laney, whom she loved very much. She travelled the Iron Range and parts of Canada. Sharon made her home available to her children in later years, and lived at her son Matthew’s home at times in the closing years of her life.
Sharon passed away after a several month battle with lung cancer and a much lengthier battle with type II Diabetes. She is remembered and survived by her three children, Lisa Gross, Roseville, MN, Ken (Ann) Gross, Stillwater, MN, and Matt (Susan) Gross, Hibbing, four grandchildren, Adrienne Gross, Stillwater, MN, Ellen Gross Stillwater, MN, Lizzy Gross, Hibbing, MN, and Gio Angelo, Hibbing, MN, many nieces and nephews, and many devoted friends and co-workers.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and sister, Patricia Jerde.
Per Sharon’s request, there will be services held for her at a later date. Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing.
