Shirley Ellen Rice

Shirley E. Rice, 82, longtime resident of Hibbing died Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at Evergreen Terrace in Grand Rapids, MN.  She was born on December 18, 1935 to John and Ellen (Hendrickson) Mills in Hibbing.

Shirley was a very devoted caretaker of her family.  She was also known for her dedication and hard work for Hibbing Taconite during her career there.  As her pastimes, Shirley enjoyed knitting and traveling whenever she could.

She is survived by her children; Marvin (Maria) Rice Jr., Kelly Lake, Ernest Rice, Virginia, MN, and Jammie (Jack) Yost, North Pole, AK, 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandbabies, and  many nieces and nephews.  Shirley’s family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to Heather Jeffers, she made sure her grandma was taken care of even if it meant putting her own life on hold.

She was preceded in death by three children, Katherine Rice, Susan Rice, and recently Frank Rice on January 2, 2018, her husband, Marvin Rice Sr., grandson, Marvin J. Rice III, her five siblings, John Mills, Elmer Mills, Mayme Jacobson, Lorraine Nelson, and June Mills, and parents, John and Ellen (Hendrickson) Mills.

Funeral services for Shirley will be 2:00pm, Thursday, February 1, 2018 at Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing, Marty Rice will officiate.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral service at the funeral home on Thursday.  A summer interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery of Hibbing.  Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing.
