Stanley Baraga, 88, a lifelong resident of Keewatin passed away quietly in his sleep on December 27, 2014 with his daughter Ginger by his side. He was one of the 8 children of Andrew and Jennie Baraga who fled to the United States from Europe in 1910. He is preceded in death by his wife, Esther Mae (Turkula), Brothers Victor, Andrew, John and Edward and sister Genevieve, grandsons Sean Crist and Timothy Chase and daughter-in-law Donna Baraga.
He is survived by three children, two daughters and a son and their families: Virginia (Ginger) and Michael Bronson (Duluth) parents of Dan, Amy, Rebecca and Mary; Kathryn (Kathi) and Jim Chase (Reno NV) parents of Christopher, Thomas, Jennifer and Sarah; Scott Baraga (Fairmont MN) and his daughters Jessica and Anna and sons Eric and Jeremy, a sister Mollie Nosan (Hibbing) a brother Frankie (Keewatin) and Sister-in-law Maxine (ED), Keewatin.
He has 9 great grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter and many nieces and nephews. He served in the US Army during WWII, and upon returning home worked for Shuirman and Sons as a driver. He and his brothers John and Ed later purchased the store and renamed it Baraga Bros.
He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying hunting and fishing with his brothers, son and nephews. He and Esther Mae enjoyed many years camping with their tent trailer be it at a campground up the North Shore or just at Robert’s in Swan Lake He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic church, Keewatin. Memorial services will be postponed until spring due to weather.
