Vernon LeRoy Syverson, 76, passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at Hillcrest Assisted Living in Nashwauk, MN. He was born on February 5, 1949, to Sigurd “Buster” and Ione (Iverson) Syverson in Bagley, MN.
He graduated from Nashwauk High School in 1967. After graduation, Vernon married his high school sweetheart, Bonnie Gorden on December 30th, 1967. He completed home schooling for drafting and began working for William Brothers construction in Grand Rapids, MN. In 1970, he started working for US Steel, first working at Kee-Tac and then Minn-Tac as a truck driver and train operator. He remained at Minn-Tac until his snowmobiling accident in 1979 that took his eye site. In the mid 80’s, he began studies for Auto Mechanics at VO Tech in Hibbing for Auto Mechanics. His abilities caught the eye of several newspapers, and an article was written about his story. Until his retirement, he worked at MDI in Hibbing, MN. Prior to his blindness, he had a love for snowmobiling and hunting in the winter months and enjoyed working on cars. He was an avid football fan and would tune into the Vikings every game.
Vernon is survived by his wife, Bonnie of MN; his daughters, Tammi (Kael) King of WI, and Roxanne Metzig of MN; his siblings, Vondra Williams of IA, Sally (Pete) Koprivec of MN, Sidney (Ann) Syverson of MN , and Rodney (Patty) Syverson of MN, Karen Foster MN; his grandchildren, Travion Stevenson of MN, Olivia Stevenson of WI, Trevor (Maddy) Sprunk MN, and Dieter Metzig III of MN; and his great grandchildren Rowan and Emilia Sprunk of MN; many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Marlys Impola, Wendy Syverson, Mona Lyman, Lucille Syverson, Roberta Schilz and Myron Syverson.
There will be a celebration of life with family this summer.
