Ward William Gustafson
Ward Gustafson, 90, of Hibbing, passed peacefully into his heavenly home on December 24, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on September 22, 1934, in Hibbing, MN, to John and Bertha (Carlson) Gustafson, Ward lived a life defined by love, service, and devotion. He proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force and served his country during the Korean Conflict, earning an honorable discharge in 1954. On September 12, 1964, he married the love of his life, Genevieve Noll, beginning a partnership that flourished for six decades.
Ward was a proud member of the American Legion and VFW, reflecting his deep sense of community and patriotism. After retiring from Hibbing Taconite, he embraced the joy of traveling to warmer climates during the winter months, visiting his children and grandchildren, and attending their sporting events and activities. Whether exploring new places or enjoying a quiet game of smear, Ward found happiness in simple, meaningful moments.
Family was Ward’s greatest treasure. He cherished gatherings filled with laughter, card games, and heartfelt conversations. His unwavering love and support created a foundation of warmth and strength for his children, grandchildren, and extended family.
Ward is survived by his devoted wife, Genevieve, of Hibbing; his children: Lisa Rowell of Otsego, MN; Alan Gustafson of Hibbing, MN; Gale (Mark) Armbrecht of Panora, IA; and Jeff (Sally) Gustafson of Maple Grove, MN; his beloved grandchildren: Ryan Rowell, Samuel Rowell, Gavin Rowell, and Isaac Armbrecht; as well as nieces, nephews, extended relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Bertha, and his siblings, John Gustafson, Jimmy Gustafson, and Marlene DeGrazia.
Ward’s legacy of love, kindness, and devotion will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
Funeral services for Ward will be11:30 a.m. Thursday, January 2, 2025, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Hibbing, MN. The Rev. Fr. Bill Skarich will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until the 11:30 am funeral Mass at the church on Thursday. Christian burial will be held immediately following the Mass at Maple Hill Cemetery in Hibbing, MN. A luncheon in Ward’s honor will be in St. Leo’s Hall, located in the Assumption Catholic School immediately following the committal service at the cemetery. Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing.
