William Henry Anders
William H. Anders, 91, Hibbing passed away Saturday, February 25, 2012 at the Guardian Angels Health and Rehabilitation Center in Hibbing. He was born on July 28, 1920 to William and Lillie (Doray) Anders in Hibbing. He lived all of his childhood in Keewatin and graduated there. Bill worked for the Hanna Mining Company until he enlisted in the Army. He was veteran of WWII, serving his country from 1942 to 1946. He spent about a year at Keesler Field, MS., before being sent to Germany where he remained until the end of the War. After the war, he returned to his job for Hanna for a short time, and then as a bartender at the Keewatin Municipal. Later he bought a bar in Federal Dam where he lived there for two years. He eventually bought a bar in Rochester. The family lived there for over 20 years. He managed several Bars across the state including the Municipal in Milaca and the Sheraton Hotel in Rochester, MN. He was a member of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Nashwauk. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and most of all, spending time with his family and friends. William and Violet Halliday were united in the Sacrament of Marriage on November 3, 1942 and were married 69 years. Together they had three children.
William is survived by his wife, Violet Anders, Nashwauk, MN., two sons, William E. Anders, Maple Lake, MN., and David Anders, Rochester, MN., daughter, Arlene Reay, Indianapolis, IN., five grandchildren, Jennifer and Sandra Reay, Jon and Alexa Anders, and Benjamin McArdle, and his nephew, Nels Schlander.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Wiliam and Lillie (Doray) Anders, and three sisters, Lois (Savolainen) Davis in 1989, Elizabeth (Dick) Laine in 2004, and Dorothy Schlander in 2006.
Funeral services for Bill will be held at 11:00am, Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church in Nashwauk. The Rev. Dennis Hoffman will celebrate the Mass of Christian Burial. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral Mass at the church on Wednesday. Interment will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery of Hibbing. Arrangements are with the Dougherty Funeral Home of Hibbing.
